Connecticut was a global hub of the commercial whaling industry during the 18th 20th centuries. Whale oil was used as a machine lubricant, fuel for lamps, and in soaps, margarine and explosives. After driving the species to the brink of extinction, the state of Connecticut paid homage to the Sperm Whale by making it the Connecticut State Animal in 1975.
